Clarke, Marcus

Marcus Clarke was a prolific and provocative storywriter, essayist, and journalist, as well as a novelist. As well as His Natural Life, Clarke also wrote the novel, Old Tales of the Young Country, a series of critical essays on writers like Balzac, Dickens, and Bret Harte, and a well-known essay on Christianity that caused an intellectual furore when it was published. His memoirs and autobiographical stories, among them ‘Holiday Peak’, Human Repetends’, and ‘La Béguine’, provide vivid insights into Clarke and the life he lived.
