Anthony Hassall is now retired, but was previously Professor of English and has been Pro-Vice-Chancellor at James Cook University of North Queensland in Townsville. He is general editor of the UQP Studies in Australian Literature series, and Executive Director of the Foundation for Australian Literary Studies. Author of Strange Country: A Study of Randolph Stow (UQP, second edition 1990), Anthony is also the editor of Randolph Stow: Visitants, episodes from other novels, poems, stories and essays (UQP 1991). He has published extensively in the field of recent Australian fiction, and also on eighteenth-century English literature, including a book-length study, Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones (1979). Dancing on Hot Macadam is a comprehensive study of Peter Carey’s fiction and was published by UQP in 1994.
