Jane Campion was born in New Zealand and obtained a diploma in anthropology before winning a place at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. Her films have won awards and recognition in Australia and internationally. Peel won the Palme D’Or for best short film at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. Her first feature film, Sweetie, won the 1989 AFI Byron Kennedy Award for excellence. The screenplay of Sweetie, co-written with Gerard Lee, was published by UQP in 1991. Jane Campion’s more recent film credits include An Angel at My Table, which won a Special Jury Prize at the 1990 Venice Film Festival; The Piano (1993), an internationally awarded success; Portrait of a Lady (1996) and Holy Smoke (1999).
