Lucy Frost is a writer and reviewer, whose research has focused on women in colonial Australia. She is the author, with Marion Halligan, of Those Women Who Go to Hotels, a book of travel and story. She is the professor of English at the University of Tasmania, and lives on the water at Lower Snug. In No Place for a Nervous Lady, she brings alive the harshness of the Australian frontier with this important selection of women’s diaries and letters. Their inspiring accounts, framed by the editor’s contextual and biographical commentary, show the rawness, loneliness, and intensity of the pioneering life. The stories these women tell privately are full of passion, pleasure, and — inescapably — pain and loss. By their frank realism, they demythologise any popular sense of a romantic bush ethos.
