Marilla North was born in Newcastle, NSW, and it was at Newcastle Girls’ High School that the stories of Dymphna Cusack first captured her imagination. She wrote a book of poetry for her mother’s birthday when she was twelve, and Jacaranda Press published her collection Blue Grass and Turtle’s Eggs in 1975. An Arts graduate of the University of New England, she has undertaken postgraduate psychology, media and drama studies at Macquarie and Sydney Universities, conducted research studies for the ABC and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School and completed an MA (Hons) in post-colonial literature at Wollongong University. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland. Marilla is also a freelance features journalist and reviewer, and teaches literature and writing skills. Marilla North has been researching and writing the biography of Dymphna Cusack for over twelve years. During the previous decade, she researched the epic saga of the writing and publishing of Come in Spinner, with Florence James. Yarn Spinners: A Story in Letters (UQP 2001), is an extraordinary collection of correspondence between Dymphna Cusack, Florence James and Miles Franklin.
