Hugh Sawrey (1919-1999), born in Forest Glen, Queensland, worked as a stockman in the outback for many years. On return from active service in World War II, he focused increasingly on his art, travelling around Australia painting murals on pub walls for his keep. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and his paintings are held in collections world-wide. The founder of the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Hugh Sawrey is now one of Australia’s most famous artists, and was made Commander of the British Empire in 1988 for his services to art. Outback (UQP 1993) and Overland (UQP 1996) are collections of travel yarns, written by journalist Lawrie Kavanagh and illustrated by Hugh Sawrey’s distinctive charcoals. A selection of columns from Outback won runner-up in the 1992 Walkley Awards.
