Tom Stannage is Executive Dean for the Division of Humanities at Curtin University, in Perth. Previously he was Professor of history at the University of Western Australia. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. In 1997 he received the inaugural Prime Minister’s Award for University Teacher of the Year. He has published in the fields of British history, Australian urban history and the history of British-Aboriginal relations. His current projects are a short history of Australia called ‘Great Southern Land’, and ‘The Ploughman in History’. He is co-editor with Kay Saunders and Richard Nile of Paul Hasluck in Australian History (UQP 1999). Although he has never shared Sir Paul’s affection for the Claremont Football Club, he finds common ground in a love of poetry. He was on the opposite side to Sir Paul during the Vietnam war, but has the same appreciation of Australia’s beautiful places and of Western Australian history.
