Robin Lucas, author of Balancing Act: Being a Stepmother (UQP 1996), is not a social worker or a psychotherapeutic professional. She is a stepmother with thirty years experience, and two separate batches of stepchildren, as well as children of her own. Robin was married to a widower when she was 20. She helped bring up his two young (6 and 8 years old) daughters and had two children herself. This largely happy experience of bonded family and half-family under one roof did not prepare her for her second marriage, where she was presented with three very unhappy stepchildren. Nowadays everyone is speaking to everyone else, and the half and step-siblings swap stories of divorce and step-childhood. In her opinion, it’s their turn to write a book.
