John Muk Muk Burke was born in Narrandera, New South Wales in l946, of a Wiradjuri mother and an Irish father. He has taught in primary schools in New Zealand, Darwin and outback Northern Terriroty, and has been a specialist art teacher and music advisor for the Northern Territory Department of Education. He was a lecturer in History and English LIterature at the Centre for Aboriginal and Islander Studies at the Northern Territory University from 1992 to 2001. His fiction Bridge of Triangles won the 1993 Unaipon Award and his poetry volume Night Song and Other Poems won the national Kate Challis RAKA Award in 2000. He served as a Unaipon judge 1998-2001. He is currently writing his next novel and recently worked as a teacher at the Goulburn Correctional Cetnre with Aboriginal inmates.
