George Davies, CBE, was born and educated in New Zealand. Two years after graduating as a dentist in April 1943, he served overseas in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force (2 NZEF). After postgraduate study and research in the United States he was appointed to the academic staff of the University of Otago Dental School, 1948-1963. In 1964 he was appointed Head of the Department and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Queensland. He was President of the Professorial Board 1974-75 and served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) from 1976 until his retirement in 1986. As Deputy Vice-Chancellor he made numerous visits to Japan to negotiate exchange agreements with several Japanese universities. In 2001 UQP published his book The Occupation of Japan.
