Philip McLaren was born in Redfern in 1943. He is a proud descendant of the Kamilaroi people from the Warrumbungle Mountain area in northwestern NSW. For many years he worked overseas with international companies in television and advertising, and in 1980 was commissioned to design a Royal Command Performance for Queen Elizabeth II at the Sydney Opera House. Phillip McLaren has produced, written, directed and designed features for leading commercial television channels. Today he is a freelance producer of television and film documentary, and lives in Sydney with his wife and two children. Sweet Water – Stolen Land is set in the Warrumbungle Mountain area. The novel was the winner of the 1992 David Unaipon Award for unpublished Indigenous writers, and was published by UQP in 1993.
