Bernard Smith was Professor of Contemporary Art at, and Director of, the Power Institute of Fine Arts, University of Sydney from 1967 to 1977, and is a Fellow and former President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. His publications include Place, Taste and Tradition, European Vision and the South Pacific, The Death of the Artist as Hero, The Critic as Advocate, Modernism's History. With Rudiger Joppien he co-wrote The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages, Volumes I-II. He is co-editor of The Art of the First Fleet and Other Early Australian Drawings and Baudin in Australian Waters.
