Peter Porter is one of Australia’s best-known poets and is “now widely considered as one of the finest poets writing in English of the late twentieth century” (Oxford Companion to Australian Literature). Born in Brisbane in 1929, he has spent the largest part of his life in England. He is the author of fifteen volumes of verse, a number of smaller volumes of verse and libretti, four volumes of poems with illustrations produced in collaboration with the Australian painter Arthur Boyd, and many unpublished radio scripts broadcast by the BBC. Porter received a honorary Doctor of Letters from The University of Queensland in 2001, and his recent honors include a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry, a Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal for Poetry, and a Forward Poetry Prize.
