Leon Cantrell grew up in Sydney where he attended and then taught at Sydney University. He has held various positions including lecturer at the University of Queensland; Chairman of the School of Humanities at Griffith University; Dean of the School of Arts at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, Toowoomba, Queensland; and Professor and Dean at the School of Arts at the University of Southern Queensland. He is now at the School of Humanities and Languages at the University of Western Sydney. Professor Cantrell has published widely in the area of Australian literary and cultural history. His other interests include the creative arts and farming. Writing of the 1890s: Short Stories, Verse & Essays (UQP rpt 1992) is the fourth edition of a text that originally appeared in 1977 as The 1890s: Stories, Verse, and Essays.
