Margaret Harris is Professor in English Literature and Director of the Research Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. She has an insatiable enthusiasm for long novels, and her extensive publications on nineteenth and twentieth century English and Australian literature include editions of novels by George Eliot, George Meredith, Arnold Bennett and Christina Stead. She is literary executor for Christina Stead’s estate, in succession to R.G. Geering. She is the editor of The Magic Phrase: Critical Essays on Christina Stead, published by UQP in 2000 as part of the Studies in Australian Literature series.
